On Jan. 1, 1999, at high noon, the tradition began with only 4 people! It now attracts more than 1,000 people. It is now held at Clayton’s.
Both registration of new Bears and shirt sales begin at 10 a.m. on Jan.1 and stop at 11:45 a.m. in preparation for the countdown and run to the surf at high noon.
There is a $100 prize for best costume donated by Clayton’s Beach Bar and this year there will be a raffle for two nights accommodation and dinner for two, donated by Barry Patel and the Hilton Garden Inn. Tickets for the raffle are a $5 donation with proceeds going to Walk for Women and the Surfrider Foundation.
There is no charge for registration or taking part in the Dip! The first 50 new bears to register will receive a pre-dip beverage, cup of black-eyed peas and champagne toast after the event.
